It all started in the dark of the night,
when the moon was high and the sun was out of sight
There were ghosts, goblins and ghouls running amuck,
causing quite a fright
They were scaring the little kiddies,
while leaving them dumbstruck
on this most ominous night
There were witches and warlocks
of one or two I must have knew
that cast a wake-up spell on tired onlookers
So they would not miss a minute of this most festive event
that only comes around here once a year
There was a black cat slinking around
Which should it cross your path
Wink your eye for a spell of good luck
For on this night, it is a good mark for one
to walk near to your standing ground
(Somewhere inbetween there were Undercover Agents who
scouted the crowd for those of you who came in costume,
for the Sixth Annual Village Halloween Parade Contest
that you could enter to win either dinner for 4
at Bubby's Restaurantin fabulous Tribeca or
for a Taste of Immortality...A Case of Vampire Wine)
There were some super heroes, of which I'll tell you
Wonder Woman came in her invisible jet
A heroine with patriotic style
dressed in her red, white and blue
While carrying a golden lasso
to rope up the evil-doers,
who may bring harm to me and you
Spiderman was there to save us should we be
bombarded with sky-scraper scaling super-villains
Batman and Robin showed up with Batgirl in tow
This do-gooder trio came to save the night
should the Joker show up to give us a fright
The rest must have been too tired from saving the day to show
There was a cast of other characters who helped
lead this veritable parade of disguised delight
I saw a Southern Belle who would surely turn your grits hot
with a mere wink of her eye and turn of her lip
Joan and Jackie Collins were there with their full fledged
sister-filled rivalry in bloom
There were some angels and devils
representing the light and dark side of life
A slew of goth inspired characters showed up,
who mostly looked like they were dressed
for a night out at The Vault - whip and all!
Out of seemingly nowhere, came a huge butterfly
flying down the avenue with wings bigger than me or you
There were many other characters, of some I didn't know,
and some I did
Such as a living computer, a beautiful princess,
a mystical unicorn, a lovely mermaid, nine bowling pins,
deathly Darth Vader, a half-groom/half-bride person
who married theirselves, vampires who came to suck your blood,
Ronald Reagan who was spouting out Reaganomics, a trio of
aliens from who knows where, there was a group of pigs
as well as a bunny rabbit or two, a rooster was there too
There were sets who appeared to be missing some pieces
Popeye was there with Wimpy,
with Olive Oyl nowhere to be found
There was half of the Teletubbies crew,
where the other half was, nobody knew
Fred and Barney were missing their better halves,
Wilma and Betty
I even saw the Simpsons, minus Maggie and Lisa
Bart must have sent them to the Brooklyn parade
as a Halloween trick
Some surmise that they may have tricked their way out
of this parade so they could party it up free at
S.O.B.'s on this night of Halloween, or maybe they
were abducted by an alien or two
You also saw people who must have had their costume stolen
from their person, because from what we the on-lookers
could see, they were dressed normal like you and me
Caravans threw out to us on-lookers loot of all kinds -
candy, beads, waxy vampire teeth, tootsie rolls,
bubble-gum and a veritable slew of flyers that were
promoting some sort of business of one type or another
There were amazing puppets in the parade line-up
that were larger than life
who came alive on Halloween night
They came in the form of skeletons, bugs and
primitive cave people
For they were fully formed entities, created in the spirit
of ritual effigies with the most luminous being Starchild
There was music of various kinds that was
strewn throughout the parade
The Squirrel Nut Zippers added their liveliness with
their horn infused music
The Hungry March Band played on with a motley crew of
characters that were dressed in dissonance
of one another with music to go along with it
Here and there were amazing drumming groups
that would cause you to move more than your feet
to their wild, tribal beat
For they all made this parade a most amusing and fun-filled
event for all, big and small
Which will be forever known to us as the Greenwich Village 27th
Annual Halloween Parade, that happened on this night
in the midst of fall
Even if you couldn't make it in person, you could have
viewed it on tv, for the Sci-Fi and USA channel
was not showing it once, but twice, on this Halloween night
