Let me tell you about some of my most favorite moments
that I had in, over and around the canyon, where I
lived and worked for seven months
There were many things to do during the day there
You could go on long desert drives
Which one of them that I went on was one when I went to a
Navajo reservation with my friend Rebecca
It was a really long drive, taking about a couple of hours
We drove and drove, then at one point we came upon the
famous balancing rocks, they were so amazing to see
So many huge massive rocks each balancing perfectly on much
smaller rocks beneath them
Such was the size difference that it seemed like an
impossible feat, an impossible feat that only Mother
Nature could beat
Then there's the seemingly endless desert
With one of them being painted
Oh, their beauty is almost indescribable
A meditation in action, that if you view long enough,
you can almost see each grain of sand that connect
one into the next, which then go on to make one huge
vast beautiful desertscape that seems to have no end
and to it's sometimes harsh will you must bend
You could also hike of course
The biggest hike I hiked in one day was the one time I
hiked all the way to the Colorado River and back,
which was around a 26 mile roundtrip in all
A trip they said no one on their own should befall
(Who do I listen to anyways, but that's another story)
On the way down, I saw capricious cactus flowers, that I
saw for the first time, they were unique and different
from any other flowers that I had seen in my lifetime
I also saw some hissing snakes, crawling spiders and leaping
lizards at the bottom of the canyon's floor
Finally I reached the river, man it felt so refreshingly good
With it's cooling waters flowing over my now hot dry skin
and quenching my almost parched mouth and throat
(I ran out of water about two hours back)
The hike back up was even more of a doozy
For all you did was walk up, up, and up,
which took almost everything out of me that I had
Man, was I glad when I finally reached the top
and my hiking up, up, up came to a stop
There were also things that would happen
on the spur of the moment
Like the day that was turning into twilight, when I was
walking around with nothing new to do, when suddenly out
of nowhere I heard drums on the canyon off in the near
distant night
Could my ears be hearing noises, I thought
No, drummers were drumming on the canyon
I could hear them clearer and clearer as I walked
closer and closer
As I got nearer to them, the drums started to put
a spell on me
A spell that called me from almost 3 miles away
I could hear them echoing on and on
Then finally I came upon them
Turned out they were a group of drummers that were heading
to New Mexico for the annual Rainbow Gathering
They drummed wildly and without care
While I danced, I crazily danced until I became
totally entranced
Oh, I was dancing on the edge of the canyon with pure
frenzy and abandon, in fact so much so that you wouldn't
know we were all complete strangers to each other,
up until this
Yeah, I didn't know them, but I thanked them for giving me
one of the best and most fun-filled days on the canyon
that I had in a while
In return, they all generously gave me a wink and a smile
Now I want to tell you about the canyon's
wondrous night skies
Oh, those skies of the canyon, those skies you never forget
In fact, I remember sitting on the canyon's edge
Staring at those beautiful red skies at night
Which were a reflection of the canyon's reds onto
the night's sky
They were so beautiful, so magical, so filled with color
With reds going into the pinks, pinks going into the whites,
then all of them swirling up into one amazing color-filled
sky that was projected onto the night
Oh, you could say those skies had more color and life
than any painting or photograph could ever contain,
and you would be right
For the best of nature's beauty you can never really
capture or maintain, especially these skies at night
Though not all of the nights were repeatedly the same
There was one most auspicious night that I
remember clearly
The moon was full and shining irridescently bright
In fact the moon's shine was so bright
That you could see the paths of the descending trails
almost all the way to the bottom of the canyon's bottom
If you happen to be hiking down them on that
particular night
There was almost no need for a flashlight
For her face was smiling so luminously that night
That you felt like you could catch her beams
in the palm of your hand
These my dear friends were some of my most favorite moments
that I had in, over and around the canyon of our
most grandest kind
